A native, perennial, warm-season, densely tufted bunchgrass growing 1-3 ft. tall with light-green, tender leaves. It has spike-like panicles 4-6" long with many bristles protruding. In its native state, it is frequently found on extremely dry sites, and growing in brush, pricklypear and places where livestock are unable to reach. Drought and heat resistant. In south and west Texas, it has some green leaves almost all winter. Readily grazed by livestock.
