A native, perennial, warm-season bunchgrass with fibrous roots. Grows erect 1-3 ft. tall. The large, green sprangled panicle is composed of 5-12 spikes; the inflorescence finally drooping and pale after maturity. Frost-resistant in fall, produces new growth during warm periods in winter, and is one of the earliest native grasses to produce spring growth. Extremely drought tolerant, it volunteers aggressively, is highly nutritious and relished by livestock.
